Ouk Chaktrang (អុកចត្រង្គ) — play traditional Cambodian chess online

Ouk Chaktrang is the chess of Cambodia, played on the same eight-by-eight board as the international game but with its own opening, its own pieces and its own way of ending. Play it free here in your browser, against a Stockfish-powered bot at three strengths or against a friend on a shared link. No account, no download, in Khmer or English.

What makes it a different game

The trey (pawns) start on the third rank, so the two armies meet immediately. The neang moves one square diagonally and may take one two-square advance early. The koul steps diagonally forward or straight ahead, the ses moves as a knight does, and the touk as a rook. Each sdach may leap once, like a knight, if it has not yet moved and is not in check. A trey promotes on the sixth rank, not the eighth. Read the full rules, including how a bare-king endgame is counted out.
